The House

I do not make perfume to be liked by everyone. I make it to be remembered by someone.

Imagine waking on black volcanic rock as the storm goes quiet. Salt on your lips, wet stone beneath you, a reef cut stinging in your palm. You tear open a wind-split mango and the juice runs down your wrists. By nightfall there is a fire, a bed of dry tobacco leaves — and one more line scratched into driftwood. Day twenty-eight.
